This is "Outerscope" a puppet-serial aired in the 70s during the VEGETABLE SOUP program on PBS. I remember the later less-nightmarish version vividly, probably having buried the above version deep in my subconscious. It was about a group of ethnically diverse kids having adventures in a spaceship they built in an old junkyard or vacant lot, can't recall exactly. What a great <strike>all-ages</strike> sci-fi, horror comic this would make if adapted into comics by Gilbert Hernandez.<br />
<br />
According to <a href="http://www.tvrage.com/shows/id-2279">tvrage</a> VEGETABLE SOUP aired weekdays from September 1975 to December 1978. Here's a blog post by <a href="http://nicksagan.blogs.com/nick_sagan_online/2006/05/vegetable_soup.html">Nick Sagan</a> that covers some history of VEGETABLE SOUP, "Outerscope," and, "Outerscope 2." This page from <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0166063/fullcredits#cast">IMDBpro</a> provides some names of perpetrators...er, people that contributed to the VEGETABLE SOUP program.g_usherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06516000440174902168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8096813680780333915.post-23810506609439585352012-08-06T17:56:00.000-05:002012-08-06T20:19:59.115-05:00Love and Rockets Links: August edition<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

clarification: Scott Dunbier said at Comic Con that <a href="http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=40175">"Jaime Hernandez turned me down"</a> on the question of doing one of those IDW Artist's Editions on his work, sorry for not catching that for our last links edition. Conducted 8-28-1981 by Bill Sherman. This is an in-depth exploration of Jaxon's earliest underground comics efforts through his transition to historical narratives. Here's the quote that may have given birth to Fantagraphics Books:</div><div> </div><div><blockquote>"[BILL] SHERMAN: Has the response [to the COMANCHE MOON graphic novel] been good enough at least to gaurantee a similar paperback package for the Sequin<br />books?<br />JACKSON: Not so far. I don't think sales have been enough to justify my<br />interest in pursuing it, frankly. I've been working on finishing the story-like<br />I did all that additional material for the Quanah Parker book-but I doubt if it<br />will be published. I'm just doing it for myself. Until that other market, that<br />straight market outside of regular underground readers, is tapped it probably<br />won't ever be published under one cover. In Germany they're interested in the<br />Seguin books, based on COMANCHE MOON's success over there. The book sells well<br />in Europe-they do it up in a real glossy package, too-but even good sales over<br />there is small compared to the normal underground market. They think in the<br />thousands instead of the tens-of-thousands." (pages 108-109)<br /></blockquote><br /></div><div>THE COMICS JOURNAL #70 (January 1982) "Fantagraphics Schedules Five New Books: Coming in 1982: Two X-Men Books, Kane's SAVAGE, and LOS TEJANOS" pages 14-15. Press release written by Dwight R. Decker. Quote pertaining to Jackson's LOS TEJANOS:</div><div><blockquote>"JACKSON'S HISTORICAL VOLUME: No firm release date has been set for Jack<br />(Jaxon) Jackson's LOS TEJANOS volume, but late Spring is considered<br />likely.<br />LOS TEJANOS will publish all of Jaxon's Texan history trilogy between two<br />covers. Parts I and II have already appeared separately as underground comics<br />from Last Gasp Comics, but Part III has never appeared before and will consist<br />of 32 pages of new material. The book will also include historical information<br />about the main character, Juan Seguin.<br />Gary Groth called LOS [TEJANOS] 'one of the most serious and ambitious<br />efforts ever attempted in the alternative press. When we heard that Jaxon was<br />finishing the trilogy, we contacted him immediately about publishing the entire<br />work in a single volume.<br />LOS TEJANOS will be over 120 pages long and is priced tentatively at<br />$7.95." But my feeling is that I don't think it really matters. I<br />think it's amazing how some people...I'll give you an idea. My favorite artist<br />at this point is an artist, Giraud, who signs his work Moebius. I tend to think<br />he is the finest artist working today.<br />"JACKSON: Very simple stuff.<br />"KANE: Well, yes and no. The interview and review are in response to a September 18, 1998 Austin CHRONICLE review of LOST CAUSE by Michael Ventura and accompanying essay on John Wesley Hardin by Jesse Sublett, calling the book, it's main character, and Jackson racist. Jackson was given no chance to respond to this charge in the pages of The Austin CHRONICLE, so editor Gary Groth stepped up and not only let Jackson speak his mind, but commissioned a more fair and balanced review of the book.</div><div><br /></div><div><a href="http://www.fantagraphics.com/browse-shop/the-comics-journal-264.html">THE COMICS JOURNAL #264</a> (November 2004) "Underground Comix Publishers" pages 113-115. Obituary/biography by Patrick Rosenkranz. There's a fascinating section describing how difficult it was for Jack Jackson to actually physically produce his life's work:</div><div><blockquote>"Drawing became slow and difficult as his hands became more crippled over<br />time. According to Jackson's son, 'He couldn't even hold his pen like most<br />people do. He had to hold it a different way, just out of his hand. It's amazing<br />how he did all that work. How he did what he did.'<br />"The artist explained, 'What happens is these muscles in your hands waste<br />away and your fingers get hooked and drawn and all of that. In bad cases you<br />won't even be able to juxtapose your thumb because the muscles atrophy so bad. I<br />had muscle transplants out there. They take muscles out of your lower arms and<br />sew them into your hands, in place of the ones that have gone away. It works<br />pretty well. It's one of those ordeals that you don't like to go through, but it<br />worked out OK.'<br />"[Michael] Priest said, 'To watch him draw was so astounding, because he<br />had to curl his four fingers around the pen staff and stab it inside this space<br />because he couldn't close his hands like we can close our hands. The most<br />astounding part was that he would do all lettering by hand and he didn't make<br />mistakes and there weren't any typos and the spacing was good and consistent.<br />But to watch Jackson cut Zipatone with an X-acto knife was just about the most<br />astounding thing. When talking about Jackson's drawing style, it's very<br />important to note that he used old-fashioned quill pens that you had to dip in<br />the ink just like everybody throughout the ages. He even turned me onto the nibs<br />he used that gave his lines that delicious tapering quality. It was also one of<br />the secrets of his lettering style.'" The interview with Kim Thompson is especially recommended by us, as he's kind of the editor of LOVE AND ROCKETS (although Mr. Thompson makes it sound sound like he's Jimmy Olsen to Los Bros Perry White!).</div>g_usherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06516000440174902168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8096813680780333915.post-40750881968450007912011-12-13T11:29:00.000-06:002011-12-13T11:38:28.449-06:00Love and Rockets Links: Marble Season<div><div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.drawnandquarterly.com/dqBlog/uploaded_images/MarbleSeasonFCBD.cover-web.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; width: 500px; height: 769px; text-align: center; display: block; cursor: pointer;" border="0" alt="" src="http://www.drawnandquarterly.com/dqBlog/uploaded_images/MarbleSeasonFCBD.cover-web.jpg" /></a><br /><div>The big news since the last post is Gilbert publishing a future book with Canadian publisher Drawn & Quarterly. <a href="http://drawnandquarterly.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html#2976755474115253702">Drawn and Quarterly 1,</a> <a href="http://drawnandquarterly.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html#8659384311147154631">Drawn and Quarterly 2 (above image via this link),</a> <a href="http://www.comicsreporter.com/index.php/drawn_and_quarterly_to_publish_gilbert_hernandezs_marble_season/">The Comics Reporter,</a> <a href="http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2011/12/dq-to-publish-gilbert-hernandezs-marble-season/">Comic Book Resources 1,</a> <a href="http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2011/12/fcbd-boom-launches-dune-bad-medicine-surfaces/">2,</a> <a href="http://www.digitalspy.com/comics/news/a355357/drawn-and-quarterly-announces-gilbert-hernandezs-marble-season.html">Digital Spy,</a> <a href="http://www.imdb.com/news/ni19378605">Internet Movie Database,</a> <a href="http://www.comicsbeat.com/2011/12/08/new-semi-autobiographical-gilbert-hernandez-book-due-from-dq/">The Beat.</a> <a href="http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/gilbert-hernandez">Tumblr posts</a>: nebraska-admiral; mepresta; librairiedrawnandquarterly; and, entrecomics. Some people have been suprised that MARBLE SEASON is not being published by Fantagraphics Books. Please remember <a href="http://www.drawnandquarterly.com/shopCatalogLong.php?st=art&art=a3dff7dd55575b">Joe Sacco</a>, <a href="http://www.drawnandquarterly.com/shopCatalogLong.php?st=art&art=a3dff7dd568fe0">Chris Ware</a>, <a href="http://www.drawnandquarterly.com/shopCatalogLong.php?st=art&art=a4b476dc1b0cf5">Dan Clowes</a>, and <a href="http://www.drawnandquarterly.com/shopCatalogLong.php?st=art&art=a45115c66edcb9">Charles Burns</a> have had projects published at (or gravitated toward) Drawn & Quarterly after long publishing relationships with Fantagraphics. It is only logical that as Fantagraphics Books develops it's art book, classic comics strip reprint, and text novel lines that some of these graphic novel projects will be picked up by other quality publishers like D&Q or Abrams. It's good news that there are more quality graphic novels being produced today than only a couple of publishers can handle.</div><div> </div><div>While waiting for MARBLE SEASON folks new to Gilbert's work might want to check out his "Kid Stuff Kids" series of one-pagers from LOVE AND ROCKETS V2#6 11 13 14 15 16, all reprinted in <a href="http://www.fantagraphics.com/browse-shop/10-contemporary/fantagraphics/852-love-and-rockets-book-23-luba-three-daughters.html">LUBA: THREE DAUGHTERS</a> or <a href="http://www.fantagraphics.com/browse-shop/576-gifts/572-quick-gift-ideas/fantagraphics/1569-luba.html">LUBA hardcover</a>.</div></div></div></div>g_usherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06516000440174902168noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8096813680780333915.post-85010468175004993382011-12-06T10:00:00.001-06:002011-12-06T10:02:49.899-06:00Love and Rockets Links: 12/6<div><div><div><a href="http://www.salon.com/2011/11/30/tales_from_the_other_comic_con/">gossip:</a> Michael Dooley reports on the Long Beach Comic & Horror Con and reveals where Jaime shops for comics.</div><div><a href="http://twitter.com/#!/McKelvie/statuses/141809237545324544">gossip:</a> Jamie McKelvie tweets that Jaime Hernandez is left-handed.</div><div><a href="http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Gilbert-Hernandez">biography:</a> NationMaster page on Gilbert Hernandez (interesting, but don't click any links).</div><div><a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/JAIME-HERNANDEZ-Y-SUS-NOTAS-NEGRAS-DE-LA-LAGUNA-POLKA-see-tracks-Tex-Mex-LP_W0QQitemZ260908107438QQcmdZViewItemQQssPageNameZRSS:B:SRCH:US:101">not Jaime:</a> But wouldn't it be cool if Jaime was the best comic book artist AND polka musician.</div><div><a href="http://twitter.com/#!/godhed/statuses/141360769563504642">twitter:</a> Jerry G tweet reviews that PALOMAR hardcover.</div><div><a href="http://twitter.com/#!/l_denmark/statuses/142626758628356099">twitter:</a> Lindsey Denmark tweet buys that chub HEARTBREAK SOUP collection.</div><div><a href="http://twitter.com/#!/Squeezegutalley/statuses/142913332125511680">twitter:</a> Nicolas Pillai tweet buys the same, for a good reason.</div><div><a href="http://twitter.com/#!/Antrero/statuses/143622331858829313">twitter:</a> Tor Ame Hegna comments on PW description of Gilbert. They finally go into battle with Maniakk and Ultimax prevails, sort of. The great part about this story (apart from the insane art!) is it's told by Maggie to a group of her friends, and each has their own reaction to Maggie's tale.<br /></div><div>For those who want to read early Jaime, but are put off by sci-fi elements of "Mechanics" try:</div><div>One of Jaime's early epics was "100 Rooms" in LOVE AND ROCKETS #4 (1983) about Maggie and Hoppy staying with Penny Century in H.R. Costigan's mansion, ostensibly so Maggie can borrow some money for her dream boots. The main feature is of course Jaime's awesome party sequence, peopled with all sorts of odd creatures and some superheroes. This story is very character driven like later "Locas" stories, with Maggie having an affair with a mysterious man, but declaring her love for Hopey at the end of the story. With Jaime's, still developing, sophisticated storytelling we are left with only the expression on Hopey's face (who's hiding around the corner) to figure out her true feelings for Maggie (expanded version page 30, panel 7).<br /></div><a href="http://www.fantagraphics.com/browse-shop/love-and-rockets-vol.-ii-16-2.html"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; width: 145px; height: 224px; text-align: center; display: block; cursor: pointer;" border="0" alt="" src="http://www.fantagraphics.com/components/com_virtuemart/show_image_in_imgtag.php?filename=bookcover_lr2.16.jpg&newxsize=145&newysize=&fileout=" />Love and Rockets Volume Two #16 via<br /></a><div><div>For those who like "The Love Bunglers" try:</div><div>In LOVE AND ROCKETS VOLUME TWO Ray, for the first time in many years it seems, encounters Maggie at a bar while in pursuit of Frogmouth. Excerpt from "Life Through Whispers" (LRV2 #11 page 2, panels 5 + 6):</div><div> </div><div align="left"><blockquote><div align="left">"[...]So then, I'm not two feet from the exit and blam! There<br />it is. My heart jolted but I still managed to make it outside"</div><div align="left"> </div><div align="left">"Damn, was it really her? Was it Maggie? Maggie with different<br />hair? What the hell was she doing here? Well, I know she knows Doyle, but...does<br />she know Vivian, too? Fuck, did she notice me? She looked right at me! My God,<br />what's next?"</div><div align="left"> </div></blockquote></div><div>Ray then very briefly reunites with Maggie through Frogmouth and Angel in the stories "Near Mint" and "Fine to Very Fine" (LRV2#15 and #16). Ray goes to a comics convention with Frogmouth in the first story and runs into Angel and Maggie, the second story continues as Ray spends the evening with Angel and Maggie at a couple of after-con parties. Ray's night ends on a sad notes as he leaves Maggie and goes back into the party (LRV2#16, page 6 panel 4):</div><div> </div><div align="justify"><blockquote><div align="justify">"I went back into the party feelin' pretty fuckin' good.<br />That is, until I realized I never got any contact info from Maggie. In an<br />instant, I was back to my pissy, cynical self all over again."</div><div align="justify"> </div></blockquote></div><div>And, that's how Jaime left Ray's short encounter with Maggie in LOVE AND ROCKETS VOLUME TWO. </div><div> </div><div>I hope this helps some of you newer readers pick out a quick starting point, as all of Jaime's LOVE AND ROCKETS, WHOA NELLIE, and PENNY CENTURY stories are now in print in those chubby <a href="http://www.fantagraphics.com/browse-shop/love-and-rockets-library-new-collections-3.html">LOVE AND ROCKETS LIBRARY editions</a>.
